Peoples Dispatch: It has been a couple of days after the first round of the Brazilian elections. Can you give an overview of what happened in the presidential elections, and also at the federal legislative level?
Gilmar Mauro: With the elections, from the first moment, we said it would be a war, a war metaphorically speaking. A war to win the elections, a war to be sworn in, a war to make a people’s government. Lula received a lot of votes, although there was an expectation that he could win in the first round, with voter opinion polls indicating this.
It didn’t happen, but it came very close to a victory in the first round, which, of course, creates good conditions for a victory in the second round. Although no such victory is a given.

The progressive government of Colombian President Gustavo Petro and the country’s largest leftist guerilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN), on Tuesday October 4, signed an agreement to restart peace talks, which were suspended in September 2018 by the former conservative President Iván Duque.
According to a joint statement, signed by High Commissioner for Peace of the Colombian national government Iván Danilo Rueda and the ELN commanders Antonio García and Pablo Beltrán, issued during a press conference in Venezuela’s capital Caracas, the parties agreed to reinstate the negotiating table, resume agreements that had been reached before the suspension, and reestablish the dialogue process after the first week of November.
The statement added that the participation of civil society groups would be “essential” for the peace talks to succeed. High Commissioner Rueda explained that the government would seek ways to make this participation possible.

This Tuesday, October 4, marks the 10th anniversary of the largest march in Venezuela’s history. With seven avenues completely filled, the people came out in the rain to close the presidential campaign of Commander Hugo Chávez.
A decade of that oath to never return to what was, of admiring how a man gave up his life for his family and for the revolution.
In commemoration, social media networks flooded with memories of that rainy and historic October 4th day on Bolívar Avenue.
It is a day to remember the struggles, which hang over the collective imagination of all Chavistas who took to those streets in the middle of a torrential rain.

The instinctive attitude of the United States towards the Chinese Revolution was of course one of hostility. In a protracted war between progress and reaction, between the future and the past, the governments of the US and the People’s Republic of China were, and are, are on opposite sides of the barricades. Hence shortly after the formation of the PRC in 1949, the US maintained a strict embargo on China.
With the move towards rapprochement in the early 1970s and a tacit agreement to ‘peacefully coexist’, the embargo was finally removed. Then with China’s strategic shift to integrate into the global economy, the trickle of trade and investment gradually expanded into one of the largest and most important economic relationships in the world, with bilateral trade volume currently standing at just over half a trillion dollars annually.
