In the order dated August 31, to which the Cape Verdean digital medium Notícias do Norte had access, the court considers that “being so, and because it seems to us that such a decision will not create great limitations, and even if it does, health it must come first, it is granted to the transfer of residence requested by Alex Saab to the city of Praia, Santiago ”.

This decision is the result of a request from the defense, to transfer from the city of Santa María, Sal, where the ambassador is under house arrest, to the Cape Verdean capital, alleging “the need for the ambassador to have assistance of specialists in the area of oncology that do not exist on the Island of Sal ”, according to what was reported by the Saab defense team in a press release.

The Court of Appeal bases its decision on the following facts: “In the analysis of the case, based on the content of the medical report and the supporting documents, it is necessary that the detainee be assisted by specialists in the area of oncology, given the declared urgency of the matter and the known lack of specialist doctors in Isla de Sal, for health reasons that no one can deny, it seems justified that authorization be granted for your transport to the city of Praia, where you can be properly treated by doctors specialized in the areas indicated in the report attached to the case documents. In addition, for humanitarian reasons, human dignity and the preponderant value of our Basic Law, which is directly related to the issue of the health of each person ”.

The defense of Venezuela’s special envoy to Iran, Alex Saab, consulted by Notícias do Norte, considered the decision positive, highlighting that “finally, a Cape Verdean Court shows some humanity towards a cancer patient.”

The Court of the Economic Community of West African States (Cedeao), in its decision on precautionary measures, had ordered that Alex Saab be allowed access to specialist doctors. The Human Rights Committee of the United Nations (UN) had already decided in this direction as well. But the Cape Verdean authorities ignored these recommendations.
