The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, toured important centers from which tasks that support the daily work of the country are assumed today: the Power Plant Maintenance Company; a vaccination center installed in the heart of the Romerillo neighborhood of Havana; and the Center for Molecular Immunology, a prestigious Cuban scientific institution

From the small esplanade of the Electric Power Plant Maintenance Company, located in the capital city of Marianao, the day-to-day story was told this Thursday. Anonymous heroes, many of them young people who in record time contributed to reestablishing the National Electric System, received the Flag of Labor Prowess in an uplifting meeting led by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz -Canel Bermúdez.
“This is a group that has always been contributing to the country,” said the Head of State, in recognition of this company, in charge of carrying out the maintenance, repair, reconstruction and modernization of the main equipment of the Cuban power plants and to secure the necessary spare parts.
In charge of this center –example of selfless work and commitment– were the recent repair work at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, which made it possible to achieve stability and efficiency in the country’s electricity generation, shortening the execution deadlines and without violating the regulations of established quality.
On behalf of the Cuban Party and Government – said the president – I want to convey my gratitude for what you have done in these times. “Here there has always been a technologically strong workforce, but also very strong in revolutionary feelings, in convictions,” he reflected.
In the midst of such daily events – he valued – sometimes we ourselves do not realize the heroism, altruism and also the capacity for creative resistance that characterizes our people.
Diaz-Canel classified as heroic the way in which they devote themselves to their daily tasks in different parts of the country to achieve stability in electricity generation and to be able to get as far away as possible from the “blackouts.” “The people have to know how you are heroes to maintain the lowest possible level of damage, in very difficult conditions,” he said.
For their unconditional contribution to the work carried out, nine grassroots business units belonging to the company were recognized in a particular way, whose contribution was decisive in the intense work days.
In a relaxed and close way, the Cuban President spoke with them, and explained to them about the many priorities that the country has ahead, where the greatest efforts are concentrated on facing COVID-19 to preserve the health of our people and, after reducing transmission levels, to be in a position to reactivate the economic and social life of the nation.
In that endeavor – he said – we all play an important role, with responsibility. There may be a lot of effort from scientists, from our health personnel, from health institutions, but we also need individual, family and social responsibility so that we do not regress, and that vaccines are effective, he emphasized.
And because in our vaccinations, in a certain way “our lives are also going to us,” the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party later visited a vaccination center in the heart of the Romerillo neighborhood, in the Havana municipality of Playa.
Local residents received the third dose of Abdala on Thursday in the spaces equipped for vaccination, in the Martha Machado Art Room, belonging to the Kcho Estudio Romerillo community cultural project.
The Head of State spoke with some of them, also with part of the Health personnel present there, and he insisted on all of them on the need to comply with health protocols and responsibly accompany the vaccination undertaken by Cuba.
Upon leaving the place, he spoke with a group of neighbors who were waiting for him, and shared with artists from the community project who brightened up the morning with their music and poetry.
Even if we are vaccinated, “he insisted,” we have to continue using a nasobuco and maintain hygienic measures, because there will always be the possibility of contagion. And while Díaz-Canel commented on the advances in vaccination actions in the country, the importance of starting clinical trials in children and pregnant women and the many challenges that COVID-19 still implies for Cuba, doubts were heard from the crowd and concerns of the population to which he responded, among them the rumors about an imminent opening in Havana, before which he assured that he would still wait a little longer to make that decision.
In his words to the residents of the Romerillo neighborhood, the Head of State reiterated that the Revolution will always be on the side of the people; Everything the Revolution does is for the people. He also shared his conviction that “we are going to continue winning and we are going to get through this moment.”
And on this path, in which it is essential to advance in the confrontation with SARS-COV-2, the contributions of Science have been vital, as well as the efforts and dedication of our scientists. For this reason, during President Díaz-Canel’s tour, the visit to the Molecular Immunology Center (CIM), an institution of high recognition in Cuban biotechnology, was inevitable.
During the exchange held by the Head of State with a group of experts and scientists who work there, Eduardo Ojito Magaz, general director of the prestigious center, recalled that, since the beginning of the epidemic in Cuba, the institution was involved in the fight against COVID-19, based on their experience, the domain of immunology and the products they had consolidated.
In this sense, he exemplified the use of the anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody, better known as Itolizumab, previously developed at the center for other purposes, and which has been used with good results in the treatment of patients infected with COVID-19. Likewise, he said that since August 2020 a laboratory has been installed there for the processing of PCR tests, where between 400 and 500 samples are evaluated daily.
Since the end of 2020 – he added – the institution has been incorporated into the production of antigens of the Sovereign vaccines, a valuable contribution that has been made from its science to the confrontation of the epidemic.
Even though the CIM is currently focused on the fight against SARS-COV-2, its Director General assured that at no time have they abandoned the work focused on the treatment of cancer patients and chronic non-communicable diseases. Different clinical trials are currently being developed based on new studies and research.
“Here you always get oxygenated,” the president told them after touring downtown areas, and considered a “merit all that they are doing.”
To his workers, especially the younger ones, the President of the Republic conveyed much gratitude for what they have been facing to combat the pandemic, and what they have been doing from here in strengthening protocols, in producing a group of products or components of those that support us in vaccines.
“With what they have done they have already achieved a heroism, and now they are going to overcome the challenges that exist with the greater production escalations,” he proudly stated.
I know that what has been done has taken them hours of complete dedication, study, encouragement, and they have shown that they have a capacity and potential that makes us sovereign; That you exist makes us sovereign as a country, in science, in biotechnology, he appreciated.
For you – he emphasized – the hug and the congratulations, and more than that, the affection for everything you have done.
