Over 3,000 workers in South Africa may be retrenched by Samancor Chrome Limited, a company involved in mining and smelting chrome ore. Samancor, with a capacity to produce 1.2 million tons, is one of the world’s largest suppliers of chrome alloys, including ferrochrome and chromite ore, which are used to give stainless steel its resistance to corrosion. South Africa supplies 30% of the global demand for ferrochrome.

Brazil’s President Bolsonaro, is the chief guest at India’s Republic Day Parade on January 26 this year. But sugarcane farmers around the country are not happy with his visit and protesting around the country for the last three days.
Brazil, largest producer of sugarcane and sugar exporter in the world complained to WTO (World Trade Organization) questioning the support of Indian government to the sugarcane farmers and alleges that WTO domestic subsidies and support rules are violated. Also other top sugar producing nations- Australia and Guatemala have also complained to WTO with similar allegations. The major complaint lodged by them against India is Along with Brazil, Australia and Guatemala have also lodged complaints against India. These countries allege that subsidy given by Indian government to farmers is excessive ie.. many times crosses WTO permitted 10 percent support of production value and causes enormous losses to other sugar producers in the global sugar market. In short they demand withdrawal of all crop support prices to farmers and other incentives given to domestic sugar industry. By inviting and rolling red carpet to president Bolsanaro present NDA government wants to please major multinational corporations in world sugar trade on the expense of five crores of small marginal and tenant sugarcane farmers and to destroy their livelihoods. Coronavirus is impacting the gold, oil, tourism crop markets. Virus fears has driven sell-off in stocks, oil, yuan.
The death toll from the virus has risen to at least 80, and confirmed cases in the U.S. rose to five on Sunday. Case has been detected in Canada also. Thailand has so far confirmed eight cases, with five already discharged and the remainder hospitalized. Thai officials said about 48 people are being monitored for possible infection. The outbreak spread rapidly over the last seven days. It has infected people in Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, France, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, South Korea, Macao and Nepal. The right to protest is an important part of Canadian democracy and the right to free expression.
Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the freedom of peaceful assembly. Protests are a way for people to express themselves for or against decisions made by government or other powerful institutions. People have taken to the streets throughout history to stand up for what they believe in.
In 1962, Rachael Carson warned us, with the publication of Silent Spring, that the indiscriminate use of pesticides was disrupting critical ecosystems and causing severe damage to human health.
Her message led to a ban on the use of DDT in the United States and eventual restrictions on its use in much of the world. Her warning also helped launch the environmental movement and its call to humanity to accept responsibility for the consequences of our impact on Earth.
