Sanctions Against Venezuela Will Make Things Worse: UN Expert

teleSUR | August 11, 2017

On Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions on eight Venezuelan officials in response to recent National Constituent Assembly.

United Nations official Idriss Jazairy is calling on world powers, especially the United States, to avoid applying sanctions against Venezuela unless approved by the U.N. Security Council.

Jazairy, U.N. special rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, said that imposing more sanctions will only make things worse.

“Sanctions would worsen the situation of the people of Venezuela, who are already suffering from crippling inflation and a lack of access to adequate food and medicine,” Jazairy said Friday, according to Reuters.

He also called for dialogue between nations to find solutions “to the very real challenges being faced.”

Jazairy’s call comes two days after the United States imposed sanctions on eight Venezuelan officials in response to recent National Constituent Assembly, ANC, which Washington continues to regard as a “power grab.”

Following the announcement of renewed sanctions, a group of four U.S. Republican Party senators called on President Donald Trump to avoid a proposed blockade of Venezuela oil imports.

The senators — Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, John Cornyn from Texas, Thad Cochran from Mississippi and Roger Wicker from Mississippi — wrote a letter to Trump, asking him to reconsider his current foreign policy.

“Domestically, we are concerned that unilateral sanctions could harm the U.S. economy, impair the global competitiveness of our businesses, and raise costs for our consumers,” the letter said, according to RT.

The Republican politicians reminded the former businessman that oil refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast which process Venezuelan crude oil make up “a significant portion, nearly 10 percent, of US imports.”

After Washington imposed sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on July 31, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin warned that anyone who participates in the ANC “could be exposed to future U.S. sanctions for their role in undermining democratic processes and institutions in Venezuela.”
