Famed Cuban songwriter Silvio Rodriguez called Fidel “one of the most extraordinary human beings of all time.” teleSUR compiles here several songs dedicated to El Comandante.
Tributes to Fidel Castro have poured in from every corner of the world, including from a number of musicians from Latin America and beyond.

As in many fields, Cuba made its presence felt in the music scene, giving the world a number of unique sounds and famous artists, including Los Van Van, Buena Vista Social Club and Silvio Rodriguez, who never hid his support for Fidel and the Cuban Revolution.

“Eternal glory to Fidel. My deep condolences to his relatives, to the people of Cuba, to the world and to the whole universe for the loss of one of the most extraordinary human beings of all time,” said Rodriguez in a post to his blog upon hearing of Fidel’s death.

Other political artists also shared their feelings about the passing of the former Cuban president.

Tom Morello, best known as the guitarist for the leftist band Rage Against the Machine, posted a lengthy statement celebrating the achievements of Fidel and the Cuban Revolution.

“There is ample reason why (Fidel) is vilified in the U.S. and yet remains a huge hero throughout the Third World. By defying Yankee imperialism for 50 years, instituting the best health care, child immunization and literacy systems in the Western Hemisphere, exporting doctors to countries in need all over the globe, and being an unrepentant advocate of the poor and exploited it is no surprise that millions will mourn his passing,” wrote Morello.

Rapper Lupe Fiasco echoed those words, saying Fidel was “a symbol of resistance against Western imperialist oppression.”

Artists have paid tribute to Fidel Castro and the revolution through music for decades. Below teleSUR shares some of the songs that demonstrate the love and admiration for the revolutionary Cuban leader.
